Call for Papers for PAHA's 77th Annual Meeting in New York, Due by 15 April 2019
PAHA’s 77th Annual Meeting will be held in New York as part of the 134th yearly meeting of the American Historical Association from January 3–6, 2020.
This year AHA announced no theme for the incoming conference. As explained in the general CFP:
Next year, as every year, the program committee will welcome all proposals and not consider relevance to a theme. For the first time since 2003, no historian will needlessly try to package a proposal to appear to fit a theme. Let a hundred flowers bloom.
https://www.historians.org/publications-and-directories/perspectives-on-history/october-2018/no-theme-for-the-2020-annual-meeting
Having in mind this encouragement to let a hundred flowers bloom as an invitation to embrace the richness of ideas and proposals that may come from our colleagues, we would like to nevertheless suggest that the incoming PAHA conference reflect on the three most recent anniversaries, the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, the centennial of Polish women gaining voting rights, and PAHA’s 75th anniversary.
We celebrated all three anniversaries only last year, and, we hope, that all three can keep pushing us to reflect on our past, the past failures and accomplishments, but also the path that we may embark upon in the future. We hence propose that the conference offers a chance to reflect on what it means to be Polish and Polish-American and how the past can guide our discussions on these question in the changing landscape of the 21st century.
We invite scholars who study the Polish-American communities or the greater Polish diaspora as well as those who deal with migration, ethnic, and regional studies and would like to join discussions related (but not limited) to the following topics:
• Polish-Americans and the restoration of Poland’s independence, 1918
• Polish-Americans and their contribution to the civic, institutional, and political life of the U.S.
• Intersections of ethnicity, class, gender, and race
• The changing understanding of the ethnic heritage
• Identity politics and the role of migrations in the past and contemporary world
• Immigration to the USA and state building in Poland and in the United States
• Transatlantic migrations to the Americas and state building in Poland and migrant communities in North and South America
• Heritage, legacy, and a new understanding of the role that ethnicities play in the modern world
• Polish Americans vs. other ethnic groups in a comparative perspective on both American continents and in Europe
• Responses to Polish transatlantic migrations in Europe, also in a comparative perspective
We invite proposals for sessions as well as individual papers related to all aspects of the Polish-American experience (in history, sociology, literature, art, music, etc.) on both American continents. We are committed to putting together well-researched and argued proposals in panels consisting of 3 participants. For the first time, PAHA is trying to implement commentators for each (or almost each) session.
Individual participants should include the following information when submitting a proposal:
- Paper title(s) and short abstracts (of no more than 300 words)
- Biographical paragraph (up to 250 words)
- Please indicate if you are willing to serve as a chair and/or a discussant for a session
- Also, note if you need A/V.
Session organizers should include the following information when submitting a panel proposal and session organizers:
- Paper/Session abstract(s) (up to 300/500 words)
- E-mail address for each participant
- Biographical paragraph (up to 250 words) for each participant
- Chair and commentator for the session
- Also, note if you need A/V.
Please be advised that it is not always possible for PAHA to provide A/V equipment for all sessions due to the high mandatory rental fee from AHA. Most likely we will try to gather all presentations that require A/V equipment in one day. It is therefore important for the presenters to indicate their need for A/V when submitting their proposal.
All presenters are encouraged to consider submission of their papers for publication in PAHA's peer-reviewed journal, Polish American Studies:
http://polishamericanstudies.org/text/13/polish-american-studies.html.
The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2019. Abstracts for papers and panel proposals are now being accepted and should be submitted to Anna Muller at anmuller@umich.edu.

Call for Papers - Poles in Latin America Conference in Gdynia, October 2016
1st International Interdisciplinary Scholarly Conference
at the Emigration Museum in Gdynia
Poles and Polish Diaspora in Latin America: Past and Present
27th-28th October 2016, Emigration Museum in Gdynia, Poland
Photo Maciej Moskwa, from culture.pl website.
The Polish have an important position in the migration history of Europe and the world. Since the early days of the Polish state, our natives have left the country temporarily or permanently, for various reasons. It was caused by the complicated political history of the Polish nation and the often difficult socio-economic situation. As a consequence, the presence of Poles is now noticeable on every continent. Latin America has an important position among the lands, which have accepted a significant number of Polish emigrants. First, the Polish had little contact with that part of the world and it was rather incidental. However, after some time, as the migration processes were developing, coherent Polish communities formed there. The Polish diaspora and Poles became an important part of the social and cultural life of Latin America. The goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for researches who specialise in the subjects connected with the Latin America Polish diaspora to meet, exchange views and take part in an interdisciplinary debate. Though we pay attention to the historic aspects of the Polish presence in this part of the world, we also want to focus on showing the image of Polish diaspora in Latin America today.
Therefore, we would like to emphasize the following questions during the conference:
current and historic place of Poles and Polish Diaspora in the societies of Latin American countries;
the Polish input into the political, social, cultural and scientific life of Latin American countries;
the history of Polish emigration to Latin America;
forming of the Polish diaspora communities in Latin America as well as political and cultural interest in this phenomenon;
the forming and changes of Polish identity in Latin America;
the image of Poles and Polish diaspora in the Polish diaspora press, journals and diary literature as well as belletristic literature and literary reports;
the image of Poles and Polish Diaspora according to the information of diplomatic and consular representations;
the relations between Poland and the Latin American Polish Diaspora;
the activity of Polish diaspora organisations and Polish clergy among the members of Latin American Polish diaspora;
the literary and cultural activity of Poles and Polish diaspora in Latin America;
the research of Polish scholars in Latin America and their connections to Polish diaspora societies.
However, the above list is not complete, when it comes to the issues, which may be presented at the conference.
The conference is of an interdisciplinary character. The organizers' idea is to gather specialists who deal with the issues of Poles and Polish diaspora in Latin America from various perspectives: historians, political scientists, culture experts, Ibero-American and Latin American studies experts, cultural anthropologists, philologists, etc. The conference will be summarized with a reviewed printed publication in Polish.
Languages of the conference: Polish / Spanish / Portuguese.
Muzeum Emigracji, Gdynia, from culture.pl.

Please send the form, which has been attached to the invitation by 17th June 2016 to:r.raczynski@muzeumemigracji.pl
The information on the acceptance of a paper will be sent by the 1st of July 2016.
The conference is free of charge for its participants. The organisers provide the foreign
participants with accommodation (26th-27th, 27th-28th and 28th-29th October), full board
and print together with a possibility of translation of a text as a part of the post-conference
publication (upon the reception of a positive review).
NOTICE: The number of participants is limited. The final choice of applications qualified
for participation in the conference will be made by the Scientific Committee
of the Conference, based on the abstracts of papers which are sent in.

In his lecture Professor Pula will describe Thaddeus Kościuszko’s visit to the United States after the American Revolution, his "secret" diplomatic mission to France, and his famous American will.
On Thursday, 16 May 2013, PAHA will hold its midyear board meeting at the Cellino & Barnes Conference Center at the State University of New York at Buffalo. It will be followed by a tour of the Polish Room collections at the UB Lockwood Library. It will be followed by comments delivered by invited discussants from the University at Buffalo (SUNY): Dr. Keith P. Griffler, Chair of the Department of Transnational Studies and Dr. Victoria W.
